3/23/20 COVID-19 & Remote Learning Update

What a day blasting off into remote learning at BUGS!  The kids were thrilled to see each other and their teachers again: sharing everything from homemade puppets and math riddles to Spanish conversations and quarantine stories. Our teachers were also excited to check in with their students and get back to the learning. It was great to see so many of our lovely BUGS students. Thank you and your family for all your efforts in preparing them for remote learning. 

Some things we learned today and/or you can assist us with include:

  • Students should follow their regular class schedule, which is also in their Google Calendar invites. 

  • Please encourage appropriate comments in class “chats.” The chat function is open for each class for students to ask questions of the teacher, and too many comments makes this difficult. 

  • Please review the webinar and BUGS Remote Learning Landing page, if you have not already.

We have been working to reach out personally to families of students who did not attend classes today, and have been working to solve technology problems or access for our families. If you need any technology help please do let us know at techteam@BUGSbrooklyn.org, and general questions to info@BUGSbrooklyn.org. On another note, I also wanted to notify you that we have heard of another BUGS parent in 6th grade who tested positive for COVID-19 and was also present at the Student Led Conferences on March 10th. 3/22/20 COVID-19 Update & Remote Learning Launch

Dear BUGS Families:

We hope this email finds you staying healthy and calm.  I cannot overstate how we appreciate your support during this evolving health crisis, and how we think of our students and families every day as we prepare to come together again for the launch of remote learning tomorrow, March 23.

COVID-19: 

Please be advised that a parent of a BUGS 6th grade student has tested positive for COVID-19. That parent was last on-site at the school on Tuesday March 10th for BUGS Student Led Conferences. The parent had no symptoms at the time. Their child was last in the building on Thursday March 12th. 

Our hearts go out to this family as our community comes together to support one another. We ask your understanding that we cannot provide additional information about the family as patient privacy issues are involved with all cases. 

There may have been students and staff members who could have interacted with the parent and child. We remind everyone, as per NY Department of Health guidelines,  to monitor for the following symptoms:

*Fever of above 100.4

*Cough

*Difficulty breathing

In addition to the above, sore throat, headache, and diarrhea should also be monitored. These additional symptoms alone do not mean that the virus has been contracted.

All individuals should be practicing social distancing and proper hand washing. If you feel the need to visit your doctor, please call first. If you believe that you have the symptoms of COVID-19, please call your doctor.

Remote Learning:  

As you know, Remote Learning starts for students tomorrow,  Monday March 23rd. As mentioned before, if you have not done so already, please do the following:

 

  1. View the Recorded Webinar for Families on BUGS Remote Learning 

This 27-minute video will provide you and your children an overview of Remote Learning at BUGS:  www.BUGSbrooklyn.org/remote-learning. 

Once you view it, feel free to send any questions to info@BUGSbrooklyn.org, and/or students should bring any questions to their Advisory class on Monday morning (see #3 below).  For ongoing tech support, students and families can write: techteam@BUGSbrooklyn.org

 

  1. Review the Remote Learning Page 

This page will be you and your child’s go-to-resource for Remote Learning resources at BUGS and will be updated overtime. Documents on the page like the Quick Guide, how-to-videos, student expectations and attendance policy etc, aim to provide you and your children evolving resources. Scroll down the page to see it in full. 

 

  1. Students Should Be Ready for Remote Learning Instruction TOMORROW Monday, March 23

All BUGS students are expected to log into their Advisory class through Google Classroom by 8:15 a.m. on Monday, March 23. There they will receive instructions on how to log into their first class (Advisory) using Google Hangouts Meet.  Teachers will be ready to provide student supports for navigating the first day of remote instruction. Students will follow their regular class schedule.

 

School Food: 

  • Starting on Monday March 23rd, grab and go meals will only be available at a designated 439 sites across the city. Please note that these sites may change over time. We will notify you if there are any changes. 

  • Meals will not be available at the BUGS/Bishop Ford Campus. However, the DOE has provided more information and a free meal site locator here: https://www.schools.nyc.gov/school-life/food/free-meals  

  • Any students 18 and under may go to any of these sites to pick up one breakfast and two lunch meals. 

  • Other relevant information: 

    • Breakfast and lunch will be available for grab and go from 7:30 a.m.1:30 p.m.

    • Grab and go meals will be distributed by Schoolfood staff members at the main building entrance of the site. Meals must be consumed offsite.

    • Currently: students will only be able to pick up one day's worth of meals (one breakfast and two lunch meals). 

 

Regional Recreation Centers (RECs): 

    • In order to successfully fight COVID-19, our first responders, health care providers, transit workers, and other key personnel must be able to come to work. That is why the DOE has created Regional Enrichment Centers (RECs)—places where the children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need. Staffed by DOE employees and community-based organization partners, the centers will provide children with three hot meals daily, remote learning time with their teachers, activities like art and music, and social and emotional support. Regional Enrichment Centers will be available citywide. More information is available on the DOE Website.

As we transition to remote learning, our C.A.R.E.S values of community, awareness, reach, exploration, student voice and sustainability continue to guide us as we begin our new normal. 3/20 Next Steps in Launching Remote Learning

 I am writing at the end of our first ever week of remote teacher training to let you know we miss you and hope you are all staying safe and healthy. Whether it’s walking home with a whiteboard through the streets of Brooklyn (making that home classroom happen!), or sharing practices on making remote learning accessible and engaging for our students, please know that BUGS staff is doing whatever it takes to keep our education community safe and connected. I could not be more proud of our team!

 Now we need your help to ensure the launch of remote learning is a success (although please bear with us as this is an entirely new initiative for our school). Even as we distributed laptops to families who needed them and lots of staff training, we know that there will be glitches along the way for all of us and appreciate your patience, flexibility, and support as we get this bold, new initiative going.

 Action Steps for Families and Students

We are working hard to ensure that we can continue to deliver high quality education that is also supportive of the whole child, sensitive to the situation, and fun.  Please encourage your students to bring their love of learning and connection to the BUGS community to their online classes and offline experiences. Specific student expectations will also be on the Remote Learning landing page of our website: www.BUGSbrooklyn.org/remote-learning 

  1. Attendance will be taken for all students during remote learning. Students will be marked present or absent depending on whether they are logged into the remote learning class scheduled. 

Please email info@bugsbrooklyn.org if: 

- you know your child will not be able to attend remote learning on a particular day

- your child attempted to log into remote learning, but experienced technical difficulties 

 

Please keep in mind the following: 

- Attendance will not count towards grades during this time

- Attendance will not impact high school admissions 

The purpose of taking attendance is to help us keep count of student connectivity in order to support students' ability to participate in remote learning.

3/17 Remote Learning Update!

Dear BUGS Families-

We hope this email finds you and your families safe and healthy, and vigilantly trying to stay that way;  enjoying moments when you can and finding ways to pull together (not physically! ;) ) as a community. We thank you for your many emails of support and appreciation as we took decisive action to transition to remote learning and continue to navigate this difficult time. (Please note: We have not been notified of any COVID-19 cases related to our BUGS learning community).   We are very pleased that the DOE followed suit with a transition to remote learning for the best interests of our NYC students, teachers, and families. 

Remote Learning 

Our staff have been working to prepare for Remote Learning.  I must say, our BUGS team is amazing, flexible, creative, learning fast, and committed to making this time positive and productive for the kids. Amidst the uncertainty and concern we all face, we’re bringing a sense of new opportunity and professional growth to the work! We know there will be kinks along the way, but we will work it out together. 

Here are some updates and additional information about BUGS transition to Remote Learning including new roll-out schedule.

There are some changes to the Remote Learning Launch:

We are no longer launching remote learning on Thursday March 19th. 

Friday, March 20:  12:00 noon (until approximately 1pm) there will be a BUGS Family Remote Learning Overview live stream for students and families that will then be recorded. 

It is required that families and students view the live stream and/or review the recording carefully together if they did not attend the live version. Instructions and details will be emailed shortly. 

Students will then ask their questions on Monday in their Advisory “class.” 

Monday, March 23:  Students will report to school by logging into their Google Classroom for their Advisory by 8 a.m. so they can join their first session at 8:15 a.m.. 

Further instructions will be posted when students login. Eventually, we expect students to follow their standard schedule via Google Calendar, with the exception of this first Monday, which may look different. Students will be directed by their advisors on next steps.

 

Technology Assistance

Tech Assistance is provided by emailing techteam@bugsbrooklyn.org.

A BUGS Remote Learning landing page on our website will provide on-going one-stop information. This page will be live Friday, March 20th.

 

Technology Access

All students will need a computer and wifi access to participate in Remote Learning optimally. Thanks to everyone who completed the tech surveys.  We have now reached all families and will distribute technology to those who need it. If you need a laptop/wifi and we have not contacted you, please contact us at techteam@bugsbrooklyn.org.

There are various offers from companies for free wifi and other resources that we will share on the Remote Learning landing page on the BUGS website and with follow up emails.  We are distributing paper packets as needed as well. We are committed to all of our students having the resources they need to access learning and being part of our online community.  

 

Students Who Cannot Be Home

Please see the NYC DOE Coronavirus updates page for information on centers throughout the city for the children of first responders, health care workers, and other families in need. This web page also has DOE updates, Coronavirus information, and Learn at Home resources for families.  

 

Building Access

March 17-19: Some staff will be at BUGS Tuesday through Thursday this week if families need access to student lockers or other items at school. No food or valuables should be left on the premises.  Please enter through the Main Lobby (not BUGS door) and check in at the BUGS Main Office. Technology distribution will also be happening at this time, as discussed with those who need it.  Please email info@BUGSbrooklyn.org or call the Main Office if you have any questions: (718) 280-9556 ext 200. 

 

School Food

March 16-20: Grab and go meals (breakfast and lunch together) are available for pickup 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. in the BUGS Main Entrance (Bishop Ford lobby). Families can also pick up meals at ant DOE school location that is convenient. Breakfast and lunch will be available together the entire time, and students are not required to be at the site for meal pick-up, any family member can get the meals.
 Week of March 23 onward: DOE will provide updates regarding more centralized locations to pick up meals.

State Testing

This is suspended, pending further instructions from the State. Please note that March 25 and March 26 which were scheduled to be half days for the State ELA exam, will now be full days of remote instruction as per students’ usual schedules.

IMPORTANT UPDATE on BUGS REMOTE LEARNING

Dear BUGS Families

We hope this email finds you safe and well.  As the COVID-19/coronavirus situation continues to evolve, please be assured that the BUGS team is working tirelessly to take actions that will best support children’s safety, health, social-emotional well-being and ongoing learning.  

After much consideration with the BUGS board and leadership, we have decided to transition promptly to remote learning at BUGS. As you know, we are closed Monday for a Professional Development day to help our staff prepare for remote learning. We will extend our Professional Development (PD) to Tuesday and Wednesday as well, at which time the school will be closed to students. Starting on Thursday, we will begin Remote Learning. All activity on school premises will be suspended during this time.  We currently anticipate students to be off-site from now until after Spring Break, returning Monday 4/20/20, but that is subject to change based on evolving information. FAQ’s and details on the Remote Learning Period will be forthcoming, as will updates on the status of State Testing.  

Please note, at this time there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 associated with our learning community that have been brought to our attention. 

The decision to transition to remote learning is both an effort to help mitigate our community’s risk, and in response to low student attendance at BUGS, with a third of our students absent on Friday, and even more absences anticipated next week. By transitioning to remote learning, we hope to preserve the safety and continued learning of every BUGS student. 

The schedule will be as follows:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday  3/16- 3/18 Staff PD days -STUDENTS ARE OFF (NO REMOTE LESSONS)

  • Thursday 3/19/20 REMOTE LEARNING PERIOD BEGINS and is currently planned to end when we return from Spring Break on Monday 4/20/20. 

    • We currently plan for Spring Break to remain as previously scheduled: Starting Thursday 4/9/20 and ending Sunday 4/19/20. 

  • “To-go” bagged breakfasts and lunches will be distributed in the Main Entrance of the building if you need them.  Call the school for more information: (718) 280-9556.
